Curriculum statement for Art and Design at Chorleywood Primary School

At Chorleywood Primary School, we are committed to providing our children with a curriculum that has a clear intention and impacts positively upon their needs.  It is designed to help pupils remember long term content and integrate new knowledge by coherently sequencing learning so that knowledge is cumulatively secured over time.

Curriculum Intent

The national curriculum for Art & Design intends to ensure that all pupils:

1. Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

2. Become proficient in drawing, painting and sculpture, and other art, craft and design techniques

3. Evaluate and analyse creative works, using the language of art, craft and design 4. Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Chorleywood Curriculum Intent

Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to inspire, engage and challenge pupils. We aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills that they need to be confident to experiment and create their own works of art, which will foster a love of the subject and give them another means through which to express themselves. We are committed to providing a rich Art & Design curriculum that will contribute positively to our pupils’ lives both in and outside of school. Every pupil will be given the opportunity to develop their talents and interests through practical activities, being taught methods and techniques whilst exploring a range of media and materials. They will also engage in the theoretical and disciplinary aspects of art, learning about and critically evaluating artists, styles and cultures, and understanding how art can reflect and represent moods, culture and social situations. We see Art & Design as a means to support pupils in a range of ways, from benefiting mental health and wellbeing, to developing cultural capital by exploring how important art has been in reflecting and shaping our history and contributing to the culture, creativity and diversity of our nation.
