History
Curriculum statement for History at Chorleywood Primary School
At Chorleywood Primary School, we are committed to providing our children with a curriculum that has a clear intention and impacts positively upon their needs. The curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to remember long-term content and integrate new knowledge by sequencing learning so that knowledge is cumulatively secured over time. Children are intentionally taught substantive (key facts) and disciplinary (how we learn/understand the past) knowledge. Our main priority is to motivate all children in our pupil base to develop a connection to the topic and to enjoy their history lessons as much as we enjoy delivering them.
Curriculum Intent
The curriculum for history intends to ensure that all pupils:
1. Understand the chronology of historical events.
2. Inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.
3. Understand the impact of historical events/eras on today’s society.
All pupils have a personal history, a sense of place and a set of relationships which provide the starting point for much of their intellectual understanding and growth. Pupils should compare and contrast their own histories with those of people separated by time or distance and recognise the diversity of the world in which they live in. Tasks should be structured to give pupils opportunities to develop critical awareness of similarities and differences between people, places and events. History fires curiosity about life and lives both past and present in Britain and the wider world. It also enhances the skills of enquiry, investigation and develops a critical approach towards sources of evidence. History is often used to inform lessons on SMSC and our role within our community and the wider world.
