RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
"It was an amazing day, very warm and 26 degrees. We arrived and set up on press day so there were not crowds of people. We carried Einstein to his destination which was about a 5 minute walk from the carpark. There were 35 scarecrows chosen out of 15,000 RHS school members. We were privileged to be there. In the setting up area, we were the only scarecrow with a living head of willow, moss and elephant leaves interspersed with felt facial feathers covering the base of oasis. The centre piece for the scarecrow area was a 7 metre high RHS built scarecrow, who was a time traveller. He was a feat of engineering.
The competition was tough but I believe Chorleywood Primary was the most original. We spent about an hour setting him up against his pole, he was a little bit tricky to get into position but we finally did it with much wire and bending. In the meantime the children were assembling his hair which was placed into position last. It was an amazing experience to be part of the RHS Institution.
Once completed we sat under the trees in the shade and ate our pack lunches and observed all the chaos around us.
The RHS created a trail we could follow around the whole exhibition; it was great fun finding all the items on the map. The maze was by far the most exciting for the children with mist, steam and water fountains appearing from nowhere. African dancers performed for us, private tours around gardens designed in a shape of DNA and chromosomes, blooming gardens in all shapes and sizes, giant cakes made from flowers, cacti growing in sculptural masterpieces, famous presenters, and Alice in Wonderland figures to discover all in a matter of a couple of hours.
It was a wonderful experience that will not be forgotten for a very long time. The children were so well behaved, it was a day not to be forgotten. Judging will be done throughout the show by putting penny's into Perspex boxes. The show starts on 30th June."
